Here at Supergoop!, we’ve been known to have a serious case of SPF-induced wanderlust––and every now and again, we’ll act on it…
So, in this new series, we’ll be celebrating all of our staffers’ travels by having them tell you a bit more about the destinations they’ve just returned from…and show off the travel-friendly sunscreen that came along for the ride. (In other words, some serious travel diary fun is about to begin…!)
First up, our brand marketing wizard, Chelsey, gives us all the lowdown on her recent trip to Isla Holbox, Mexico with her husband, Michael.
What was the most memorable part of your trip?
Lunch every day at a tiny hole-in-the-wall called Ceviche La Chingada. The most amazing ceviche on the planet with a pint glass of made-to-order passion fruit juice – perfect for escaping the midday sun. And, a kayak through the mangroves during a torrential downpour!
What was your favorite spot?
The beach outside of our hotel. We stayed on the far west side of the island where it’s a bit less popular. Our beach was quiet, with all-white sand and crystal clear water. There are hammocks strung up where the water is ankle-deep and you can lay in the hammock in the middle of the ocean and watch the tangerine-tinged sunset – magic!
What was your travel-friendly sunscreen and beauty routine for this trip and why did you bring each product?
I kept the beauty routine simple – heavy on skin care, light on makeup.
In the mornings I use Biologique Recherche Lait U to cleanse, followed by P50 (it is truly the best). Then I moisturize with Valmont 24 Hour Priming Moisturizer and finish everything off with Supergoop!’s Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40. I wasn’t wearing makeup during the daytime and Unseen is so great because it leaves your skin looking really smooth and dewy.
In the evenings, if we were going out to dinner, I’d add a little makeup, including Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Natural, Glossier Cloud Paint in Haze, Glossier Lash Slick (best mascara out there), Laura Mercier Eyebrow Pencil in Blonde, Glow Stick on my cheeks and nose for a highlight and YSL Rouge Volupte in Orange Perfecto (the best vacation color)
What Supergoop! products did you use non-stop and why?
Everyday Sunscreen SPF 50 is my holy grail travel-friendly sunscreen, especially when I’m going somewhere beachy like Holbox. I hate to check a bag so my husband and I usually pack a couple of 2.4oz EVD each – it blends in so easily, it’s water-resistant, I can use it on my face as well as my body, and it never breaks me out. I love a multipurpose product, especially when traveling! I’m also obsessed with Glow Stick SPF 50 – I never board a plane without it! It’s TSA-friendly, moisturizing (v. important when you’re seaside for the day) and so compact. At the beach, I use it for reapplication (hands free = no sand on your face), and when I’m wearing makeup I’ll use it as a highlighter. Plus, I also usually have an Açaí Fusion Lip Balm floating around in my purse because your lips need SPF, people!
Did you discover any SPF hacks or tricks? Any SPF tips for those who travel to the same spot?
Not really an SPF hack but it’s worth saying: reapply, reapply, reapply!
Also, don’t skimp on it when it comes to packing – you’re on a remote island, after all!
What are your top three food recs for Holbox?
Ceviches La Chingada – tiny, scrappy, so delicious.
Porque No Helado Artesenal – we got handmade ice cream here daily in delicious flavors including fig, guava and coconut!
El Chapulim – a jewelbox of a restaurant where the chef comes to each table to recite the menu (which changes daily), perfect for a romantic dinner!
What about your top activity recs?
Kayaking the mangroves (rain or shine!). At the right time of year you can see flamingos everywhere. Sadly, we were too early in the season for this but we saw so many wild birds and even a baby alligator.
Biking the island. Rentals are easy and you can cover most of the island this way!
We were also too early for this, but swimming with the Whale Sharks is something Holbox is famous for and I would have loved to do it!
