Here at Supergoop!, we’ve been known to have a serious case of SPF-induced wanderlust––and every now and again, we’ll act on it…so, in this series, we’ll be celebrating all of our staffers’ travels by having them tell you a bit more about the destinations they’ve just returned from…and show off the travel-friendly SPF that came along for the ride. (In other words, some serious travel diary fun is about to begin…!)
Here, our partnerships and experience expert, Allie, talks to us about her epic trip to Lake Como, Italy. She also dishes on the perfect SPF to take when you’re diving off a boat into the most picturesque setting (um, we’re not jealous or anything, we swear…).
What was the most memorable part of the trip?
For my friend’s birthday lunch, we took a beautiful classic wooden boat to a restaurant on a cliff overlooking Lake Como. We had a wonderful seafood lunch and an unforgettable affogatto for dessert. Just as we were leaving lunch, the sky opened and it began to pour. We decided to brave it back across the lake in our wooden boat during the storm. We all got soaking wet – and a bit jostled – but loved the adventure of it all!
What was the most memorable location?
All the little towns surrounding Lake Como are so incredibly beautiful and memorable — it’s tough to choose just one! Our villa was in Mennagio, a very charming town right on the lake, surrounded by mountains. It was one of the most picturesque places I have ever seen. We went on a few beautiful hikes, my favorite of which ended with a dip in the ice cold torrent.
What was your go-to SPF-and-beauty routine for this trip?
My beauty routine is always pretty simple, especially when on vacation. Skincare, on the other hand, took up most of the real estate in my cosmetic bag. On this trip, I used Farmacy Clean Bee Facial Cleanser, followed by Youth to the People Power Toner. Next up was Superscreen Daily Moisturizer SPF 40. This is truly the perfect moisturizer for a beach (or snow!) vacation because it is super hydrating, soothing AND packed with SPF 40, all in one jar. Since we spent so much time in the sun, I used Supergoop! Glow Stick on my cheeks, forehead and shoulders as the final step.
For the occasions that did call for a little makeup, I primed with Supergoop! Mineral Matte Screen (even at night, because I love the smooth, matte finish). During the day, I used Supergoop! CC Cream for light, SPF-infused coverage and at night I used Burberry Fresh Glow Gel Stick No. 12. For a rose-tinted highlight, I used Shimmershade in Daydream on my cheeks (my fave SPF hack!). I used Shimmershade in First Light on my eyelids, Glossier Boy Brow in brown for natural but full brows, and YSL Rouge Pur Couture in Rose Bergamasque on my lips.
What Supergoop! products did you use when you were living your best life on the lake?
Supergoop! Glow Stick SPF 50 is the ultimate SPF travel companion. The solid stick formula is very TSA-friendly, it’s super portable and easy to apply on your face, neck, shoulders (and anywhere else, really). It’s a dry oil, so you get a beautiful glowy look without any greasy feel. It’s also great for quick reapplication to super sun-sensitive spots, like your forehead, knees and shoulders. Warning: it’s also a total crowdpleaser, so I recommend bringing a few to share (and spare!).
I also used our Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist non-stop because it’s super easy to apply when you’re in and out of the water all day. The bottle is non-aerosol, so you can spray it from any angle and get even coverage.
What are your top three food recs for Lake Como?
Veluu — For dinner with the best views, overlooking the lake.
La Barcola in Mennagio — A sweet little locals-only spot in the middle of a garden. The polenta uncia was my favorite dish.
La Punta — A beautiful lunch spot on the lake with the best affogatto.
What about your top activity recs?
Rent a boat for the day and take it around the lake. It’s the best way to see all of the amazing villas!
We took a day trip to Como and had the best time walking through the streets, shopping and eating. We had lunch at a sweet cafe right outside of the Duomo.
Definitely take time for a hike! There are so many beautiful nature walks with wildflowers and waterfalls.
