Happy Skin Cancer Awareness Month! To acknowledge this super important month, we teamed up with the skin experts over at Heyday for a limited-edition design of our Defense Refresh (Re)Setting Mist SPF 40. We also chatted with a skin expert at Heyday to give you the best tips on how to take care of your skin at home.
During a time when you may be missing your monthly facials, it’s still important to care for your skin. Here’s what Chrissy C., a Heyday skin expert, does to take the best care of her skin during this trying time. Spoiler alert: Daily sunscreen made the list!
Stay hydrated and always find time for your routine
“Aside from drinking tons of water and not wearing makeup, I’m religious about cleansing and applying my proper night time routine, no matter what time it ends up happening,” says Chrissy. “I’m also finding time in between Zoom calls to put on hydrating and soothing masks to keep my skin’s stress in check.”
Adopt a “core four” routine
The “core four” routine includes a cleanser, an exfoliant, a moisturizer and sunscreen. “It’s important to remember that your skin gets stressed too,” says Chrissy. “If it’s feeling a little out of sorts right now, keep it simple and try not to introduce too many new actives. And don’t skip SPF just because you’re inside all day — it’s incredibly important to understand that the sun is always out, and your windows are not UVA and UVB protected!”
If you’d like to combine two steps of your daytime routine into one, look into our hybrid products, like Superscreen Daily Moisturizer SPF 40 and Zincscreen 100% Mineral Lotion SPF 40. If you like to wear foundation, try our SPF primers, like our 100% invisible Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40, our 100% mineral Mattescreen SPF 40 and our newest hydrating, glowy primer, Glowscreen SPF 40.
Reapply your SPF
If you’re looking to pick up a good habit during this time, Chrissy thinks getting into the routine of reapplying your sunscreen every two hours is the one to pick up. “Throughout the day our SPF will naturally breakdown when exposed to UV light,” she says. “Also, general wear and tear, like coming in contact with clothing or cell phones, generally touching our faces or leaning on our hands can cause sunscreen to break down.”
One of the easiest ways to reapply sunscreen is with our SPF setting spray, Defense Refresh (Re)Setting Mist SPF 40. It’s a handy light mist that contains broad spectrum SPF 40 to keep you covered all day. “It has a super refreshing smell and is packed with powerful antioxidants to give your skin extra defense from UV and free radical damage and will even help to balance oil production,” says Chrissy. The best part is that it goes over bare skin and makeup wonderfully, with no creasing or damage.

Treat yourself (safely)
While Chrissy doesn’t think you should attempt any major treatments that you get from a trained facialist (like extractions!) on your own, she does think it’s a good idea treat yourself to a mask every now and then, or even a new tool.
“I’ll never tell anyone to extract at home, but I do love to tell clients to give themselves mini treatments at home,” she says. “It doesn’t have to be fancy, but something as simple as masking right after an exfoliant can increase the efficacy of the ingredients in your mask. Or try something fun with your extra time, like a new gua sha tool or LED light to up your anti-aging game!”
