This spring, we’re shining a spotlight on five inspiring individuals who live their brightest lives with joy, passion and a healthy dose of SPF.
In this article, we sat down with environmental advocate and organizer Wawa Gatheru to find out how SPF enables her to inspire change in the world around her.
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Wanjiku “Wawa” Gatheru and I am an environmental justice advocate, writer and current graduate student at the University of Oxford. I am a first generation American of Kenyan descent and the first Black person in history to receive the Rhodes, Truman and Udall Scholarships. I founded the organization ‘Black Girl Environmentalist’, where I uplift voices of those most adversely impacted by environmental inequities through changing conservation conversations.
What is your ideal morning routine?
The first thing I do is get up and make myself a cup of tea. I really am always surrounded by tea (I’m on my third cup today already!) I then write in my gratitude journal for at least 5 minutes. Starting off with gratitude has provided me with so much insight on how to handle the day, especially bad days. That’s really important to me. Then I usually send a text to my sisters, I’m really close with them. I also usually read for like 20 minutes. Then I take a shower, wash my face, and then I head to the computer to answer emails while I eat.
What role does sunscreen play in your life?
As an environmental justice advocate, advocating for and protecting people + planet includes my own body, my temple. My skin is my biggest organ and it’s important that I do what I can to protect her. There was a time where I did not think SPF was as necessary for me, as I am a dark skinned Black woman. However, my mother — who is a registered nurse — sat my siblings and I down and explained how even melanin-rich individuals, like ourselves, need everyday protection from the sun. I see protecting my skin as an integral part of showing myself the love I deserve.
How do you incorporate Every. Single. Face. Watery Lotion SPF 50 into your daily routine?
I believe the best way to begin the day is through intention. After writing in my gratitude journal, I move onto my bathroom routine. I brush my teeth and move onto my skin routine. I’ve spent the past several years seeking products that work for my skin and am happy to have finally found a routine that fits my unique face. Every. Single. Face Watery Lotion has quickly made its way into the mix, as I was — for a long time — in search of a sunscreen that did not leave a white cast, was cruelty-free and made with both people and planet in mind. Every. Single. Face. Watery Lotion now serves not only as my everyday SPF, but as a smooth base for my makeup routine.
