Our founder, Holly Thaggard, looks back at the story of Supergoop! and how her mission has always been to make sunscreen a healthy habit for every person and all different skin types. Read on to learn more.
With the launch of this month’s Every. Single. Day. campaign (quick fun fact: we trademarked “Every Single Day” years ago), I wanted to take a moment to talk about how I set out to make SPF a healthy habit over 15 years ago, with the start of Supergoop!.
Back in 2004, when I first started working on Supergoop!, sunscreen was a sleepy category. No one wanted to wear it every day because it was icky, sticky and smelly. But when my friend was diagnosed with skin cancer at age 29, I quickly learned that it was the best thing we could be doing to take care of our body’s largest organ, our skin, on a daily basis.
So, I set out to create the best SPF under the sun with Supergoop!. It wasn’t like I was starting a handbag company and then having to convince women that they needed to carry a handbag every day…I was starting an SPF company and having to convince everyone that they needed to wear it daily (a big difference – and quite the undertaking!).
I knew it was going to take a very special product to help me accomplish my mission, which is why I’ve been obsessed with this triple threat from day one: clean ingredients, feel-good formulas and product innovation.
- When it comes to clean ingredients, we were the first SPF brand not to use oxybenzone in any of our formulas, with the launch of our first sunscreen, PLAY Everyday Lotion SPF 50…and that’s just the beginning. Our entire product lineup is also free of synthetic fragrances, parabens and over 100 other questionable ingredients.
- As for texture, I knew that people wouldn’t love putting anything on their skin every day that didn’t feel good. So everything that we’ve launched at Supergoop! has had to feel amazing on the skin…a luxurious moisturizer, a whipped mousse, a refreshing body mist.
- And last but not least, product innovation. We take SPF where it’s never gone before by slipping it into your favorite beauty and skincare essentials…a (completely invisible) primer, a makeup setting spray, a dry shampoo, a shimmery cream eyeshadow and more.
Because of our dedication to each of the above, we’ve created – and been riding – the SPF wave and seeing people’s perception of it totally change. Sunscreen is something that people now want to use every single day…it shows up in every skincare meme, it’s included in every GRWM and it’s often the first thing people think of when it comes to daily age and skin cancer prevention.
I’ve got to think that it had something to do with how we were the first ones to really pay attention to it over 10 years ago. I’ve always said that I wanted to make SPF a healthy habit like brushing your teeth or washing your hands…and I think we’ve begun to do just that. But somehow, we’ve also managed to make it a little magical in the process.
So thank you for believing in me and the mission behind Supergoop!: to get everyone to wear sunscreen every single day. Here’s to more sun-filled and sun-protected days ahead!
