What’s the best tinted sunscreen? It’s no surprise that tinted skincare and beauty products are all the rage these days – tinted face oil, tinted lips, tinted eyebrow pens, tinted moisturizers…the list goes on, and it most definitely includes tinted sunscreens, too! Here we’ll tell you more about the benefits, as well as help you pick the right one of ours based on your skin type.
First off, why should you consider wearing a tinted SPF? Aside from the fact that tinted sunscreens offer nice coverage and help mask any imperfections, they’re especially great if you have any skin conditions, like melasma, that need extra protection from damaging environmental stressors.
“The tint in tinted sunscreens is usually provided by iron oxide, which broadens the spectrum of protection of the product,” says New Orleans-based dermatologist Dr. Deirdre Hooper. Broadened protection means that on top of being protected from UVB and UVA rays, you’re also being protected from damaging light like visible light and infrared radiation. “It turns out visible light and infrared light can trigger melasma, too, so I always recommend tinted sunscreen to my patients with melasma,” says Dr. Hooper.
Here are the best tinted sunscreens we have available, based on your skin type and desired finish. (And btw, all of these choices do contain iron oxides, so if you have melasma, then these SPF picks are for you, too!)
Zincscreen 100% Mineral Lotion SPF 40: For extra sensitive skin
If you have skin that reacts easily to almost everything, you should try Zincscreen 100% Mineral Lotion SPF 40. This is our daily face lotion that was made for super sensitive skin. It only contains non-nano zinc oxide as its sunscreen active (non-nano means that the particles are larger than 100 nanometers and sit on top of the skin).
Zincscreen also contains a super flattering pink tint that helps even out your skin and mask any lingering acne scars or hyperpigmentation. It’s also packed with other clean ingredients, like winter cherry (to help protect you from blue light) and coconut fruit extract (a “Goldilocks” type of moisturizing ingredient that makes it not too hydrating but not too drying).
100% Mineral Matte Screen SPF 40: For oily skin
If you’re dealing with overactive oil glands, Matte Screen SPF 40 will come to your rescue! This is a translucent-tinted sunscreen primer that works on a wide range of skin tones to help control oil production and keep things looking matte-nificent. It also works to smooth out unevenness and reduce the appearance of pores.
Matte Screen SPF 40 contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as its sunscreen actives and also helps to protect you from blue light with butterfly bush extract. It also creates a beautiful, makeup-gripping canvas for your favorite foundation or CC Cream.
Daily Correct CC Cream SPF 35: For those who love coverage
If you’re the tinted moisturizer type, it’s time to step up your game and include one in your routine that contains adequate SPF protection, like our Daily Correct CC Cream SPF 35.
Our cult favorite CC Cream is beloved for its lightweight texture that’s still seriously color-correcting. It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, redness and blemishes, and people also love using it as a concealer.
100% Mineral Setting Powder SPF 45: For reapplication
Reapplying your SPF is of the utmost importance (all SPF fades and degrades every two hours throughout the day), and our 100% Mineral Setting Powder is a great way to top off your sunscreen while also absorbing any excess oil. It contains broad spectrum SPF 45 and comes in three shades (light, medium and deep), as well as translucent.
