Which SPF Base Layer Is Best For Me?

What’s the best face moisturizer with SPF for your skin? In your typical SPF wardrobe, there are different sunscreen steps that all serve different purposes. Today we’re going to talk about the first step: your SPF base layer, AKA a moisturizer or lotion with SPF.

When it comes to SPF base layers, we make two equally amazing, multitasking products: Superscreen Daily Moisturizer SPF 40 and Zincscreen 100% Mineral Lotion SPF 40. Keep reading to find out which one you should add into your daily rotation.

There’s nothing better than a multi-tasking skincare product, which is why we worked hard to offer two base layer products that work to hydrate and nourish your skin all while providing SPF and pollution protection.

What do Superscreen and Zincscreen have in common?

The beauty of Superscreen and Zincscreen is that they both offer the same amount of sun protection — broad spectrum SPF 40 — and they both have have a PA+++ rating. They both also act as a wonderful base layer to hydrate and prep your skin for your favorite primer and foundation.

What sunscreen actives are in each one?

One of the biggest differences between Superscreen and Zincscreen are the sunscreen actives used in each product. Superscreen is a 100% clean chemical sunscreen that uses three clean chemical actives to protect skin from UVA and UVB rays: avobenzone, homosalate and octisalate.

Zincscreen is a 100% mineral sunscreen and uses only zinc oxide as the sunscreen active to protect skin from UVA and UVB rays. This zinc oxide is also non-nano, which means the particles are larger than 100 nanometers in size which allows the actives to sit safely on top of your skin.

So what skin type is each best for?

Superscreen SPF 40 works wonderfully on normal and dry skin types. This is because it has more hydrating properties than Zincscreen SPF 40. Superscreen is also the better choice if you have a darker skin tone since it blends in clear with no white cast. On the other hand, if you have really sensitive, acne-prone or oily skin, then Zincscreen SPF 40 is the way to go. (We understand those are three very different skin issues, but Zincscreen works well for each one for different reasons.)

Zincscreen leaves behind a more natural finish, while Superscreen leaves behind a more dewy finish. Also, it should be noted that since Zincscreen is a 100% mineral sunscreen, it won’t blend in completely invisible, like Superscreen. Instead, as you can see in the photo below, Zincscreen contains a pink tint that does allow it to blend into more skin tones than your average mineral SPF – but it’s still might not work on all of them. Read more about why we included the pink tint here.

What situations would I use each one in?

If you have combination or normal skin, or just skin that fluctuates, you may be wondering why you can’t find times to use both Superscreen and Zincscreen, and we’re definitely here for that!

Here’s our advice: Reach for Superscreen when the weather is colder and your skin is parched for hydration or when your skin is not dealing with any sensitivity or breakouts. On the other hand, grab Zincscreen when the weather is super hot and you don’t necessarily need a hydrating moisturizer. You’ll also want to go for Zincscreen when you’re dealing with acne or any kind of flareup since it’s super clean and has those non-nano actives we talked about above that won’t seep into pores and cause irritation.

The bottom line

The base layer of your sunscreen wardrobe is super important since it serves as the foundation of your morning routine. Once you apply the right base, you can add the right sunscreen primer and additional sunscreen layers for optimal protection.
